i’m not really into the whole “organic” thing (as an organic chemist i am always tempted to inform people that all food is technically organic) but i will give it a go, and maybe if i’m sufficiently impressed, i will give organic food a chance.

It concerns me when people beat themselves up over things in order to motivate change. How can you set up a good foundation for doing things differently when it’s motivated by shame and/ or fear? In my observations, people who work this way very rarely work through the problem they’re so concerned with… they just end up compounding it.

Start here: respecting and honouring yourself. Then go somewhere.

General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that love is everywhere. Often, it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there - fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit the Twin Towers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge - they were all messages of love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaking suspicion… love actually is all around.”

- Love Actually (via ispeakforthetrees) (via mmeadowlark) (via lajoiedevivre) (via havealittlefaithinme) (via justbesplendid) (via lanipauli)

"I love the web as a medium — I think it is the primary context and language of today, and that the..."

“I love the web as a medium — I think it is the primary context and language of today, and that the most truly transformative forces of our near future will take place online. I especially love the web’s ubiquity, accessibility, democracy, and reach. But there are some things that books still do better. With a book, an author can choose the very best bits and pieces, carefully construct a narrative, polish every mark and comma, and freeze the finished object in a timeless form that he can give to his mom. This kind of permanence is largely foreign to today’s transitory web, awash in novelty and flooded in (mostly superficial) communication as it is.”

- Jonathan Harris on The Sum of All Emotions (via lanipauli)

Rudd's $26b funding gift to private schools

Rudd's $26b funding gift to private schools:
Nice, Kevin.

Interesting article and the program sounds amazing, but the last few paragraphs worry me.

The Uniting Church is calling for an overhaul of special religious education as a result of the trial. Its NSW Moderator, Niall Reid… said religious organisations acknowledged the merit in ethics classes, but “it does not solve the larger problem of how NSW students were learning about their own and other religions”.

A) Who actually learned about “other” religions in their primary schools? Few, if any.

B) I’m confused by these two paragraphs. What, precisely, is the problem?

10 Commandments for Total Happiness

willowphoto:

1. Act Your Shoe Size. Whatever it was you loved doing as a kid, start doing it again.

2. When it comes to sex, listen to your body, but give your brain emergency veto power.

3. Preserve your little rituals: 9 AM cinnamon lattes, Sunday pedicures, August girls’ getaways.

4. Miss no occasion where there will be great music and everybody dancing.

5. Celebrate silly-versaries: your first paycheck, first kiss, first caviar.

6. Manage your expectations. A galaxy-size gap between what you expect someone to do and what they’re capable of doing will only bum both of you out.

7. Have an in-case-of-emergency-break-glass outift in your closet - something that makes you feel appropriate and awesome.

8. Fake it till you feel it. Acting more confident, outgoing or enthusastic can make any wallflower bloom.

9. Don’t try to fix everything or always have the answers. Just know how to listen.

10. Be nice to mean people. Watch as they become confused!
